Mountaineers climb into soccer rankings

Mohawk’s two varsity soccer teams have broken into the Top 5 rankings of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.

The unbeaten men’s team, with a record of two wins and two ties, has bumped London Fanshawe, to take over the No. 4 spot. Mohawk is coming off a pair of weekend road victories against Windsor St. Clair and Sarnia Lambton.

Oakville Sheridan bounced Ottawa La Cite for the fifth rung. The Bruins are unbeaten in three games.

And there is a new No. 1 on top of the OCAA men’s soccer rankings.

North York Seneca has leapfrogged two spots to the top of the rankings following a 2-1 win over previous No. 1 Ottawa Algonquin on Saturday. Seneca edged then unbeaten La Cite the previous day, improving its record to 4-0-1. Algonquin drops to No. 3 in the rankings.

Etobicoke/Toronto Humber holds steady at No. 2 after a weekend off. The Hawks blanked Niagara 2-0 last Wednesday.

The women Mountaineers sit No. 5 at the expense of Welland Niagara after tying St. Clair 2-2 before defeating Lambton 3-0 this past weekend.

The top three spots in the women’s rankings remain unchanged, with Fanshawe, Humber and Algonquin holding firm. Fanshawe defeated Kitchener Conestoga 2-0 on Saturday, while Humber defeated Niagara 5-1 last Wednesday.

Algonquin remains perfect through four games, having defeated three consecutive 2009 playoff teams.

Seneca jumps one spot to No. 4, having lost to Algonquin 2-0 on Saturday after winning four straight games. Niagara is winless in two games after winning its first three.
