The Hamilton Bulldogs completed their American Hockey League pre-season schedule with a perfect 3-0 record after defeating the Binghamton Senators 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.
It took nine rounds of a shootout to determine the victor but Dany Masse scored to give the Bulldogs the win at Mile One Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Hamilton outshot the Senators 36-28 who scored three times on the power play.
The ‘Dogs opened the scoring at 5:02 of the first period with a shorthanded goal. Mathieu Carle fired a shot from the blue line that David Desharnais deflected past goaltender Mike Brodeur. The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead at 8:09 when J.T. Wyman carried the puck from centre ice and beat Brodeur.
The Senators made the game 2-1 at 16:45 of the period. Jim O’Brien sent the puck back to Mike Hoffman, who waited patiently before releasing a shot that sailed past netminder Robert Mayer. Binghamton tied the game at 8:13 of the second stanza. Hoffman blasted a shot towards the net and Erik Condra deflected the puck past Mayer.
The ‘Dogs regained the lead at 3:22 of the final frame. Andrew Conboy sent a pass to Neil Petruic, who was positioned at the blue line. Petruic blasted a shot that beat Brodeur.
Condra tied the game at 6:49 of the third period. He snapped a high shot which Mayer stopped but Condra swatted the puck out of mid-air and into the net.
Neither team could score in the extra period, which sent the game to a shootout. Only Hamilton’s Alexander Avtsin and Binghamton’s Kaspars Daugavins scored in the shootout until the ninth round when Masse broke the stalemate.
Hamilton will open its 15th AHL season on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7:35 p.m. when they travel to Rochester to battle the Americans. The Bulldogs first home game is set for Saturday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. against the Toronto Marlies.
