The Mohawk Mountaineers’ women’s soccer team lost a hard-fought 2-1 decision to the Conestoga Condors as Krystal Sousa scored the winning goal for Kitchener in the 89th minute.
Mohawk led 1-0 on Andrea Urquhart’s first half goal, but then, with the rain coming down in buckets, Sidney Murawsky pulled the Condors even in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association contest at Mohawk Sports Park on Tuesday (Oct. 5).
Mountaineers’ co-coach Michael Castellani agreed it was a tale of two halves.
“We played like we should in the first half. Good ball control. We were thinking and moving up the field,” said Castellani. “But then after the break we thought it would be easy. Conestoga stepped up and we fell back. It was only a matter of time before we paid for it.”
The coach noted the team has the numbers to make the playoffs, but he was hoping to finish second to get a first-round bye and home field for the quarter finals. That now seems unlikely.
The Mountaineers are 3-2-1 with two games remaining, but they trail both Humber and Fanshawe by six points.
