Two players for Brock Badgers teams were named male and female Pioneer Petroleums Ontario University Athletics Athletes of the Week for the period ending Oct. 10.
Shaun Valeriote, a first-year Sport Management major from Guelph, helped lead the Brock baseball team to their third OUA championship in the program’s history. In the playoffs, Valeriote batted .500 going 4-for-8 which included a 3-for-4 performance in the semifinal victory over Toronto and a clutch two-run single in the championship game off OUA top pitcher Adam Paish of Western.
For his performance, the OUA most Valuable Hitter was also named the playoff Most Valuable Player. Primarily playing shortstop, Valeriote finished the OUA season, including playoffs, with a .500 overall batting average going 30-for-60 in 15 games.
The Badgers’ Beth Clause took the female honour. The fifth-year Recreation and Leisure major, helped lead the Brock women’s hockey team to a 2-0 record to start the OUA regular season with victories over York, 4-2, and Toronto, 4-3. In two games, Clause recorded 69 saves with a .932 save percentage.
In her university career she has averaged 31 saves per game as she closes in on 3,000 career saves and 6,000 career minutes played.
