No easy road to fastball final for Mohawk

The Mohawk Mountaineers are set to do battle in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Women’s Fastball Championship today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15-16) at Durham Field in Oshawa.

This is the 30th anniversary of the championship and the host Durham Lords have won the provincial title 14 times. However, St. Clair Saints of Windsor are the two-time defending champs. The Seneca Sting of North York are six time winners, but haven’t triumphed since 1999.

Mohawk has won numerous medals at the OCAA final, but just one gold, which came in 2001.

The two-day event is a double knockout affair.

The Mountaineers will have their hands full from the get-go. They open the championship today at 11 a.m. Durham was 10-0 in the regular season, while Mohawk won only twice. However, the Mountaineers blasted Conestoga 11-1 in a sudden death game that put them into the championship. They also led Durham 5-1 entering the seventh inning during the regular season, but the Lords pulled off a stunning comeback to win.
