The Mohawk Mountaineers had to settle for third place in the Wannamaker Invitational Women’s Volleyball Tournament at Sheridan College in Oakville this weekend (Oct. 15-16).
After winning two pool matches on Friday, the Mountaineers rallied Saturday to defeat host Sheridan Bruins 24-26, 25-21, 15-4. They then took Loyalist of Belleville in straight sets, 25-16, 25-14. That put them into the semi finals where they were defeated by the Nippissing Lakers of North Bay 23-25, 25-23, 15-17. However, Mohawk bounced back in the bronze medal contest, beating Loyalist again, 25-20, 15-25, 15-8.
Mountaineers’ head coach Sean Pellow said pretty much all of the starters played really well when the team was up. But he conceded the team was very inconsistent Saturday afternoon. “We proved we can play with the top teams when we play well, said Pellow. “But we have difficulty keeping our game at that level for a long period of time.”
