The following student-athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics football Players of the Week for the period ending Oct. 17.
On Special Teams, Lirim Hajrullahu of the Western Mustangs put his best foot forward. The second-year (kinesiology major) kicker/punter from St. Catharines led Western’s offence with 18 points on three field goals and eight extra points, along with a rouge from a kickoff as the Mustangs blanked York 76-0.
He booted 10 kickoffs for 595 yards and had three of his eight punts inside the 20-yard line. Hajrullahu was perfect on three field goal attempts from 26, 19 and 13 yards out. He leads Canadian Interuniversity Sports in scoring with 88 points (19 field goals, three rouges, and 28 extra points).
On offence, the Guelph Gryphons’ Chris Rossetti was tops.
The third-year quarterback from Mississauga was a marksman for Guelph on Saturday in the Gryphons 41-14 win over the Windsor Lancers at Alumni Stadium. He threw a career-high 338 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Gryphons to their fourth win of the season. Rossetti had a monster performance, going 20-for-28, with zero interceptions.
He also picked up 63 yards on the ground on nine attempts to round out his best performance of the season.
Joe Cappiello of the Toronto Varsity Blues brought down defensive honours.
The fifth-year Blues defensive lineman totalled four tackles, a league-high three sacks and two forced fumbles against the nation’s top offence, the McMaster Marauders, this past Saturday at Varsity Centre. In the Marauders first series of the second quarter, Cappiello sacked Kyle Quinlan and forced a fumble, which set up Kevin Asare’s 75-yard score for the Blues second major of the day. The Toronto native also got to the McMaster quarterback in the first and fourth quarters in a game won 40-21 by the Marauders.
