After dropping their opening game Friday, Mohawk bounced back for a 94-81 victory over Niagara on day two of the 16th Annual Viking Men’s Basketball Tournament at St. Lawrence College in Kingston Saturday (Oct. 23). With the victory, the Mountaineers earned a spot in the Consolation Final.
The teams were even 13-13 five minutes into the game, but then Niagara got on a couple of good runs to lead 39-28 at the half.
However the Mountaineers returned hungry following the break and a 13-3 run left them tied 49-all with 12:40 remaining in the contest. Mohawk then took a 57-51 lead after Jermaine De Costa hit a three-pointer, followed by a driving layup. That forced the Knights to call a time out, but the Mountaineers then went into overdrive and stretched their lead to 88-63 with just five minutes remaining,. They finished with a 9-3 run and the win.
Aminu Bello scored 23 points and had 9 rebounds while Nick Fadayel had 18 points and 10 boards to lead the Mountaineers, who shot 43.2 percent for the game. They were 59.1 percent in the second half.
Mohawk will meet George Brown for the consolation title Sunday at 1:00 pm. The Huskies defeated Georgian Grizzlies 82-57.
