The Algonquin Thunder of Ottawa downed Mohawk 96-80 in game one of the St. Lawrence Vikings Invitational Men’s Basketball Tournament in Kingston Friday (Oct. 22). The Thunder built up a 26-14 lead midway through the first half. The Mountaineers rallied to trail by four points, but Algonquin then hit three straight three-pointers and led 48-41 at the half.
Mohawk came out strong to start the second half and pulled to within three points, but with about 15 minutes left, play was halted by a fire alarm and didn’t resume for almost a half hour including a brief warm-up. Algonquin then took control and went on to win.
Aminu Bello had 26 points to lead the Mountaineers. Jermaine De Costa scored 21 and Alex Reis added 15. Algonquin shot 44.9 percent from the floor while the Mountaineers shot 37.2 percent.
Mohawk’s next game will be Saturday at 1:00 pm versus Niagara. The Knights were defeated 71-65 by host St. Lawrence.
