Adam Petrina’s goal, well into extra time, gave the Mohawk Mountaineers a 1-0 win over the La Cite Coyotes in OCAA quarter final men’s soccer in Ottawa Sunday (Oct. 24). It also helped earn him a OCAA player of the week award for the week ending October 24.
The victory secured a berth in the OCAA championship in Toronto Friday and Saturday (Oct. 29-30) for Mohawk College.
Second-year striker Petrina (Grimbsy) caught attention under pressure. He had a hat trick against Niagara College in a sudden death OCAA playoff qualifier last Tuesday, resulting in Mohawk College’s 6-4 overtime win. And then his goal in overtime versus La Cite Collegiale.
Petrina’s four-goal outburst in the post-season is even more impressive when compared to his 2010 regular season output of one goal in eight regular season matches.
On Saturday, Algonquin Thunder edged the Mohawk women’s soccer in quarter final play. The Thunder are unbeaten in OCAA women’s soccer, going 8-0-0 in the regular season; they now move on to the OCAA Championship. Algonquin led 3-0 before Mohawk scored two goals very late in the contest.
