Redeemer College volleyball teams have bumped their combined records to 3-1 with two road wins this past weekend against the St. Clair Saints in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play.
The Royals traveled from Ancaster to Windsor in their first away games of the season. The women (2-0 league play) defeated St. Clair in a close match 3-2 while the men (1-1 league play) grabbed their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory.
The women remain perfect after almost letting the game slip away. Up 2-0 the Saints rallied back to tie it up at 2-2 and only by a score of 15-13 did the Lady Royals managed to pull out the win. The game results were 25-15, 27-25, 19-25, 23-25, 15-13. Erika Straatsma continued her dominating play with an exceptional game posting 14 kills, 8 aces, and 20 digs. Teammate Ashley Muller wasn’t far behind posting her best game of the season with 14 kills, 5 aces, 1 block, and 10 digs.
Alee Brecka had 21 points for the Saints.
The men’s team finished off the sweep as they grabbed their first win of the early season with a 3-0 win. Game results were 25-21, 25-20, 25-21. After a disappointing result in their season opener, the men regrouped into form in a convincing win over the Saints to pull there record even at 1-1. Brent Knibbe had a game high 14 points for the Royals on 10 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks, and 3 digs. David Klomps and Christian Vandergeest also hit double figures as they had 11 points and 10 points respectively. For the Saints, Gabriel Bruzzese had a team high 12 points.
Both volleyball teams will look to continue their winning ways on Nov 4 when the Fanshawe Falcons come to town. Both men’s and women’s games will be a great test for the Royals to gage just where they may fit in the tough OCAA West Division.
The women’s game kicks off at 6 p.m. with the men following two hours later.
