The Royals men’s volleyball team, obviously upset with their current provincial ranking (10th), proved their critics wrong with a thrilling five-set victory against the No. 2 ranked London Fanshawe Falcons. Fanshawe is ranked No. 8 in the country. Coming into the match, the Royals were 1-1 while Fanshawe sat atop the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West division with an undefeated record of 4-0.
The Royals, hosting Fanshawe at their Ancaster campus, went up 2-0 only to see their lead disappear as Fanshawe tied it up and forced a fifth game. In that match, no team wanted to move an inch as the sides exchanged points until Redeemer finally broke through, 19-17.
The game featured some high scoring with Redeemer’s David Klomps leading the way with a game high 19 points off of 15 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks. Christian Vandergeest and Brent Knibbe also hit double figures with 17 and 14 points respectively.
Fanshawe also had three players hit double figures as Jordan Westman had a team high 17 points while Andrew Thorpe and Demetri Kantzos had 13 and 10 points.
Next up for the men is their cross-town rival Mohawk when they battle at Redeemer on Nov. 13. Mohawk is currently ranked third in the province and sits undefeated at 2-0. The women take the court at 2 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m.
