The McMaster Marauders men’s rugby team dismantled the defending Ontario University Athletics champion Queen’s Gaels, 34-20, in the semifinals on Saturday (Nov. 6).
The win avenges the 8-17 loss Mac suffered last season to the Gaels in the playoffs.
Marauder’s lead-scorer Andrew Ferguson (Mississauga) led the Marauder charge with 11 points on a try and three conversions. Tyler Ardron (Lakefield) had 10 points on two tries with the second solidifying McMaster’s win in the dying minutes of the game. Michael Sheppard (Brampton) and Davor Stojanov (Stoney Creek) also added tries in the match, and Shawn Windsor (Stoney Creek) contributed one penalty goal.
Myles Dingwall (Ottawa) led Queens’ scoring with 10 points on two tries.
McMaster will be looking for its fourth OUA Championship in six seasons as they head to Fletcher’s Field next weekend, Sunday, Nov. 14, to face the Western Mustangs in the title game.
The last time the two teams met in the conference final was in 2006 when the Marauders scored a try in the dying minutes of the game to win 15-10.
