Marauder women fall behind early, can’t recover in cage loss

Fifth- year forward Nicki Schutz (Toronto) scored 25 points to lift the Toronto Varsity Blues over the McMaster Marauders 51-53 Saturday (Nov. 6) at the University of Toronto.

The Blues sit atop the Ontario University Athletics East with six points off their 3-0 record while the Marauders drop to 0-2.

Toronto wasted no time jumping up the scoreboard, leading 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Marauders were outscored by only two points in the second and headed into the half trailing 36-20.

Despite significantly out shooting Toronto (44.2% to 24.6%), the Marauders were halted by the Blues’ 17 successful shots from the charity stripe.

Taylor Chiarot (Hamilton) shot 66.7% from the field and led the Marauder attack with 14 points. She also contributed 11 defensive rebounds and a steal in the loss. Sophomore Vanessa Bonomo (Dundas) nailed two threes in her 12 point game, and Alyska Lukan (Barrie) contributed 11 points.

Schutz, the OUA’s third best scorer last season, carried the home team with eight of 22 successful shots in the paint and nine of 14 free throws while she also snatched up 14 boards.

The Marauders are home to the 0-2 Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Burridge Gym.
