Ryan Blake (Stoney Creek), Kevin MacLellan (Hamilton) and Sean House (Hagersville) all finished in the top two of their respective categories Saturday (Nov. 6) to help McMaster finish seventh overall at the McMaster Invitational men’s and women’s wrestling meet.
Blake topped the men’s 72kg class for his second win in two tournaments. He started with a 7-4 win over Matmen’s Jason Brenton-Hurst. In the semi-final he easily defeated Teamimpact’s Joel Godding, 9-1, and John Feng couldn’t muster any points against the Ontario University Athletics champion in the final, giving Blake the gold.
MacLellan topped three matches in the men’s 82kg class to make it to the finals against Concordia’s Matt Miller where he was defeated 8-0.
In a smaller 90kg group, House defeated Vanier’s Jordan Byer (4-0) before being topped by the Gryphon’s Walter McCrindle in the final.
Also for the men, Adam Benish (Hamilton) was fourth and Allan Middleton (Sault Ste. Marie) and Mohammad Badakhshanfard (Dundas) were both sixth in the men’s 130kg, 65kg and 90kg classes respectively.
The men’s team scored a total of 28 points to finish second amongst the 20 teams.
On the women’s side, rookies Nicole Mazara (Haliburton), Christianna Walker (Minden) and Alyssa Laframboise (Windsor) all finished fifth in their categories while second year social sciences student Bianca Fung (Mississauga) was sixth.
