Rookie Taylor Black (Stoney Creek) drained his final points of the game at the buzzer on Friday night (Nov. 19) in the Burridge Gym to propel the McMaster Marauders to a two-point win (69-67) over the visiting Queen’s Gaels in Ontario University Athletics basketball play.
The Marauders improve to 2-3 in conference play with their second straight victory while Queen’s drops to 1-4 for sixth place in the OUA East.
Gael Timothy Boyle (Belleville) sunk three with 11.5 seconds left to tie the score at 67 apiece. Sophomore Victor Raso (Hamilton) grabbed the ball behind the net with 0.8 seconds remaining and fed it to Black who kissed it off the glass.
“Victor made a perfect read and Taylor obviously had a perfect finish,” said McMaster coach Amos Connolly. “Our team needed this. We’ve squandered some leads. It’s nice to catch a break.”
Cam Michaud (Grimsby) led the Marauder attack with 17 points and five steals. Black snatched up six boards in the win while finishing with 12 points. Kenan Etale (Dundas) also recorded 12 points while sinking six of eight free throws.
Veteran guard Dan Bannister (Newmarket) led Queen’s with 28 points. Bannister currently has the third highest scoring average in the OUA with 21.40 PPG.
