Marauders continue volleyball dominance over Gaels

You can always be sure that a clash between McMaster and Queen’s Gaels will be an entertaining one and Sunday afternoon (Nov. 21) was no different as the Marauders narrowly edged the Gaels, 3-1, at the Burridge Gym in Ontario University Athletics volleyball.

The loss was Queens’ first this season, after entering the match at 7-0 and ranked tenth in Canadian Interuniversity Sports. Not only do the Marauders improve to 6-2, they have bumped Queen’s out of their first place tie with 8-0 Western.

The Marauders have now won six out of their last seven conference meetings with the Gaels.

The Gaels were ahead by one after winning the first set 22-25, but the Marauders evened the score with a five point (25-20) win in the second. McMaster took the lead after the third (25-15) then Queen’s tied things back up with a 23-25 fourth set. The entire audience was on the edge of their seats in the fifth set as the teams traded points but the Marauders came out on top, 15-12, for the win.

Rookie middle Jori Mantha (Vanier) had another stellar game for the Maroon scoring 23 of the team’s 69 points off 15 kills, four aces and six solo blocks. Kevin Stevens (Winnipeg) and Tyler Santoni (Kingston) both added 14 points each while Josh Lichty (St. Catharines) had 17 digs.

Brian Fautley (Oakville) led Queen’s with 18 kills and 21 points.

The Marauders will head to Toronto to wrap up the 2010 portion of their conference schedule with games against 3-5 Ryerson on Friday, Nov. 26 and 2-6 York on Saturday, Nov. 27. Game times are set for 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively.
