Heading into Sunday’s (Nov.21) match up in the Burridge Gym, the Marauders and Brock Badgers were tied for second in Ontario University Athletics West women’s volleyball play but four sets later, McMaster emerged winners (3-1) and moved into a first place tie in the division.
McMaster improves to 6-1 while Brock drops to 6-3. McMaster, Guelph (6-2), and Brock all lead the West division with 12 points.
The match was tight all the way through and the Marauders were pushed to 27 points before they could pick up the first set. In the second, the Badgers had 14 kills to McMaster’s nine which enabled them to tie the game. McMaster won by a three-point margin in the third before wrapping up the game with the score board favouring McMaster 25-17 in the fourth.
McMaster’s blocking played a key role in today’s success as the Marauders blocked Brock 20-8. Both Shannon McRobert (Whitby), and Sarah Kiernan (Hamilton) were walls up front for McMaster, tallying 10 solo blocks between them.
McRobert was also the lead scorer for McMaster with 19 points and 14 kills. Kiernan also mustered 14 kills and five digs in the win.
For the opposition, Shannon Anderson (Newmarket) added 24 points to bring her 2010 total to 131.00 for second place in the league.
McMaster will wrap up the 2010 portion of the conference season in Ottawa next weekend on Friday, Nov. 26 when they clash with the 5-2 Gee-Gees.
