Women Marauders drop a pair of cage contests

The McMaster Marauders women’s basketball team fell to the Ottawa Gee-Gees, 75-56, in theirOntario University Athletics final regular season game of 2010 on Saturday. Mac also lost on Friday, when the Carleton Ravens took a 71-49 decision.

The Marauders return to the court Jan. 5 in the Burridge Gym at 6 p.m.

Saturday’s first-quarter saw the Marauders keep pace with the Gee-Gees, leading by five points after the period. However, after that point, the Gee Gees pulled ahead, eventually extending their lead to 19 points.

Taylor Chiarot (Hamilton) led the Marauders with 14 points and nine rebounds. Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto) recorded double-doubles for the Gee-Gees with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

On Friday, the Ravens pulled away from McMaster in the second half for the win.

The home-side led from the opening basket. Carleton held a 16-12 advantage after the first. But McMaster picked up its play at both ends of the court in the second and were able to make it a one-point game, down 22-21. With the clock winding down, Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville) completed a three-point play and a buzzer beater by Alyson Bush (Ottawa) gave the Ravens a 37-30 lead at the half.

The Marauders struggled to get their shots to drop in the second half of the game. Carleton did a good job attacking the rim and began to pull away. The Ravens continued their strong play in the fourth, extending their lead by as much as 24 points. They outscored McMaster 17-7 in the quarter to take the 71-49 victory.

Elizabeth Burns (Hamilton) led the Marauders with 16 points and five rebounds.
