Warriors win streak stops at five

The Stoney Creek Jr. B Warriors and Welland battled in a tight defensive and hard fought game Tuesday night (Dec. 14) at Valley Park Arena with the Canadians gong home with a 2-1 victory.

The loss snapped a five-game home winning streak for Stoney Creek, which has only two regulation home losses all season.

Stoney Creek (14-12-2) opened the scoring in the first period when brothers David and Marcus Ruberto setup defensman Danny Carter to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

The Warriors would hold that lead until late into the second period when Welland’s Matt Vizzari tallied on the power play and tied the game 1-1.

There would be no more scoring until late in the third period when, with 1:45 remaining, Welland’s Jeff Verreault scored the game winning goal.

However, the Warriors weren’t quite done. They stormed back and scored with 3-seconds remaining in the third period. Unfortunately the officials waved off the goal, indicating that the net had been dislodged.

Stoney Creek outshot Welland, 30-28.

Newcomer Marcus DelConte got the start in goal, his third straight, and was solid between the pipes again.

The Warriors are home to the Thorold Blackhawks on Saturday (Dec. 18).
