Boyd lifts Hamilton to OT win


Two goals by Dustin Boyd carried the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 3-2 overtime win over the Texas Stars in American Hockey League play on Saturday night.

Boyd scored the game-tying goal late in the third period and then scored the overtime winner for the visiting ’Dogs.

Following a scoreless first period, the Stars got on the scoreboard first at 2:38 of the second stanza. Philip Larsen fired a shot that was stopped by goaltender Curtis Sanford. Sanford was out of position from making the save, which allowed Travis Morin to whack the puck past the goaltender.

The Stars took a 2-0 lead at 12:41 of the final frame. Cody Chupp received the puck from Francis Wathier before sending a shot towards the net. Aaron Gagnon redirected the puck into the net.

Hamilton scored at 13:33 of the third period. With the puck bouncing in front of the Stars’ net, J.T. Wyman raced in and poked the puck between the pads of goaltender Richard Bachman. The Bulldogs tied the game at 17:08 with a power-play goal. David Desharnais centered the puck to Boyd, who fired a backhand shot to beat Bachman.

In overtime, Boyd scored at 1:07 of the extra period to end the game. Brendon Nash sent the puck to Ben Maxwell, who dropped a pass to Boyd, who fired a shot that sailed into the net.

Each team had 33 shots on net before a crowd of 6,518.

The Bulldogs continue their five-game road trip with a game against the San Antonio Rampage Sunday at 5:30 p.m. EST.
