Mohawk finished 0-3 against university opposition, but put on quite a show during the Mountaineers last game of the Ryerson National Invitational Men’s Basketball Tournament in Toronto on Thursday (Dec. 30).
The Algoma University Thunderbirds from Sault Ste. Marie, who play in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association with the Mountaineers, got a basket from Patrick Murray with one-half second remaining in the second overtime period for a 99-97 decision.
The teams were tied 76-76 after regulation time. They both scored 11 points in the first overtime and looked like they’d be heading to a third extra session until Murray sank his buzzer beater.
Dele Oworu led all scorers with 27 points for the Thunderbirds.
Aminu Bello scored 25 points to pace the Mountaineers, while Jermaine De Costa had 22. Tyrone Berry hooped 15 points and Alex Reis added 13.
