The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Lake Erie Monsters 3-2 on Wednesday night at Copps Coliseum. Andreas Engqvist scored a goal and added an assist for the Bulldogs while Curtis Sanford made 29 saves for the victory. The game was played in front of 1,927 fans.
Following a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs opened the game’s scoring at 5:27 of the second stanza with a power-play marker. Ben Maxwell sent the puck to the right point, where Kyle Klubertanz was positioned. Klubertanz blasted a shot that was stopped by Lake Erie starting goaltender Jason Bacashihua. Olivier Fortier grabbed the loose rebound before flipping the puck over the pad of Bacashihua.
The Monsters tied the game 1-1 at 7:25 of the middle frame. Cameron Gaunce received the puck from Justin Mercier while positioned at the blue line. Gaunce hammered a shot that sailed through traffic and past Hamilton starting goaltender Curtis Sanford.
The ‘Dogs took a 2-1 lead at 10:17 of the second period. Engqvist skated into the zone before blasting a loose puck from the top of the right faceoff circle. The puck sailed over the blocker of Bacashihua and into the top left corner of the net. Ryan Russell increased the lead to 3-1 at 16:47. Alexander Avtsin sent the puck Engqvist, who fired a shot that was stopped by Bacashihua. The rebound bounced to the left side of the net, where Russell was positioned. Russell whacked the puck past the goaltender and into the net.
Lake Erie cut the lead to one at 18:20 of the third period. Ryan Stoa released a shot that was stopped by Sanford. The rebound popped out in front of the goaltender and into the slot, where Ben Walter was stationed. Walter fired a low wrist shot that squeaked past Sanford and into the net.
The Bulldogs will host the Syracuse Crunch for a game at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 14th at Copps Coliseum. All regular season Hamilton Bulldogs broadcasts on AM 820 CHAM will begin with a pre-game show 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
