Marauders score upset downing Lancers in basketball

With the game tied and just 8.1 seconds left on the clock Scott Brittain (Oakville) stole a Windsor inbounds pass and raced the length of the floor to jam in the winning basket securing McMaster’s 83-81 upset of the #6 Lancers on Wednesday night at the Burridge Gym.

With the win the unranked Marauders improved to 6-5 in Ontario University Athletics conference play and may have just turned the corner on their season. For the Lancers it was only their second loss of the season giving them a 9-2 record.

The Marauders led most of the contest including at half time when they headed to the locker room ahead, 42-41. Mac maintained its lead until eight minutes remaining in the ball game when Windsor, on the strength of some hot shooting by Monty Hardware (Toronto), retook the lead. The two teams traded baskets, and the lead, for the remainder of the contest.

Hardware’s three-point basket at 2:07 in the fourth quarter gave Windsor the lead, but Victor Raso (Hamilton) answered with a three of his own that tied the game at 81-81 with 1:50 remaining, setting up the dramatic finish.

Coming out of a time out with 15 seconds left and the ball McMaster setup one final play but couldn’t enter the ball cleanly giving it back to Windsor. With Windsor coming out of a timeout of their own with 8.1 ticks left on the clock their inbounds pass was stolen away by Brittain and he quickly threw down a two-handed dunk with time running down. The Lancers attempted a three at the buzzer for win but it didn’t go and McMaster took the win.

Brittain finished with a team high 14 points and eight rebounds. Scott Laws (Gormley) with 13 points, Kenan Etale (Dundas) with 11 and Cam Michaud (Grimsby) with 10 paced the McMaster offence.

Hardware topped the Lancers with 20 points, most of which came in the fourth quarter. Isaac Kuon added 18 points and Josh Collins had 13 points and seven assists in the loss.

McMaster will look to capitalize on the momentum of their upset win when they host the Brock Badgers on Saturday (Jan. 15) at 2 p.m. in the Burridge Gym.
