Mohawk duo takes men’s badminton division

Chris Hong and his partner, Mohammad Nazimuddin, of Mohawk College won the men’s doubles ‘B’ Flight at an open badminton tournament at Sudbury’s Cambrian College Jan. 14-16.

“Chris and Mohammad performed very well,” said Mohawk head coach Tony Leite. “The competition in men’s doubles is very strong.”

While the Hong-Nazimuddin result highlighted Mohawk’s weekend performances, Leite said the team is playing together more and looks impressive. The Cambrian tourney was the final one the Mountaineers will participate in. They will now work on their play leading to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Regional Championships which Mohawk will host Feb. 4-5.

One final badminton note this week and hopefully the players took note: The coach showed he still can play the game. Leite and former Mohawk star Krystal Lumaoang were runners-up in the ‘C’ Flight mixed doubles at the open event at Cambrian. But Leite said he has no intention of recruiting himself.
