McMaster men’s volleyball coach Dave Preston has two more reasons to be excited about the future of his squad, as two top recruits have confirmed they will be donning Maroon in September 2011.
Preston will welcome 6-foot-3 Daniel Groenveld of Welland and 6-foot-4 Alex Elliott of Cobourg as the newest Marauders and he expects both to make an immediate impact.
“These are two tremendous athletes and outstanding volleyball players,” says Preston. “Both have great careers ahead of them and I’m looking forward to watching their development as Marauders.”
Daniel is the latest member of the Groenveld family to become a Marauder, following his older brothers Nathan and Jeremy, who both achieved Canadian Interuniversity Sports All-Canadian status while playing for Preston at McMaster. He has been the driving force behind numerous national and provincial medal performances by the Hamilton-based Mountain Athletic Club team.
Elliott is winding down his high school career in style, leading both his Durham Attack club team and his Cobourg District Collegiate East high school team to bronze medal finishes at their respective provincial playoffs this season. At 17, he was one of the youngest invitees to Ontario Volleyball’s High Performance Centre to train with the under-24 program and Team Canada coaches. Elliot was also elected student body president of his high school.
Preston believes both will add to the culture of excellence he has tried to build at McMaster. “They are great players, but both are also great young men. I think they personify what McMaster student-athletes should be: successful students, terrific players, and great people who will be great teammates. I think our program is a perfect fit for both of them.”
With his recruiting efforts not finished, Preston is hoping the early commitments of Groenveld and Elliott will help sway some of the other talented players he is in contact with, toward attending McMaster.
