The McMaster Marauders men’s basketball team lost a nail biter to the Lakehead Thunderwolves, 78-76, in the Burridge Gym on Friday night (Jan. 21).
Big Mac Player of the Game Scott Laws (Gormley) led the Marauders with 19 points.
Jamie Searle (Belleville) was the game’s leading scorer, tallying 22 points, 18 of which came from beyond the three-point arc.
The Marauders led throughout the first half, though Lakehead was never far behind. The visitors, who sit in second place in the Ontario University Athletics West division, finally made their mark in the third, whittling away McMaster’s slight lead, and surpassing them to sit at a 58-52 advantage going into the final quarter.
With the momentum generated throughout the third, Lakehead’s Searle continued to hit shot after shot from the three-point range. Fortunately for the Marauders, Kyle Giedraitis (Dundas) answered with three consecutive three-point shots of his own. The Marauders managed to come within two-points in the final minute. But with 1.4 seconds to go, Laws was unable to get his foul shots to drop, and the score remained at 78-76 when the final whistle blew.
The two teams meet again at 8 p.m. in the Burridge Gym on Saturday.
