The McMaster Marauders women’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker 71-66 decision to the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves in the Burridge Gym. Tasia McKenna (Timberlea, NS) scored 35 points in the Ontario University Athletics game where the lead was continuously traded between both teams on Friday (Jan. 21).
The Marauders got off to a great start, and at the end of the first quarter McMaster was up, 19-11. The Thunderwolves appeared to shake off some of the rust from their trip to town and spent the second quarter chipping away at the Marauders’ slim lead, eventually claiming it at the seven-minute mark. With seconds to spare and the Thunderwolves leading by 3, Vanessa Bonomo (Dundas) made a great drive to the basket, and brought the Marauders within one-point going into the second half.
A close third quarter set the stage for an exciting fourth. The Marauders, led by stats leader Jaklynn Nimec (Binbrook) regained the lead they’d fought for throughout the game. Unfortunately for the Marauders, with foul trouble and the ball just not bouncing their way, the team lost their edge on the scoreboard, and the Thunderwolves pulled ahead in the final minutes.
Nimec led the Marauders with 17 points, and Alyska Lukan added 11 rebounds in the loss. McKenna was the game’s high scorer, and Lindsay Druery (Smithville) recorded 11 rebounds for Lakehead.
The Marauders get another chance at the Thunderwolves tonight (Saturday) in the Burridge Gym at 6 p.m.
