Mohawk men ground Lakers in volleyball

“It’s been a rivalry since I played and I played against their coach.”

Those words from Mohawk men’s volleyball coach Matt Schnarr, in the aftermath of his team’s emotion-charged straight sets victory over the Nipissing Lakers of North Bay on Friday (Jan. 28) at the Fennell Gymnasium. The Mountaineers won 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 and the result left the two teams with identical 7-5 records in the OCAA West Region.

“I’ve been waiting for us to play a complete match,” declared Schnarr, who said his side was focused and executed the game plan to a ‘T.’

“We manipulated our opponent. That is a good team.”

Mo Sulaiman paced Mohawk with nine kills, three service aces and four stuff blocks. Allan McGrath had seven kills, one ace, one block and six digs.

The Mountaineers get right back into action Saturday (Jan. 29) when the Canadore Panthers, also of North Bay, visit. The match starts at 2 p.m.
