Ancaster’s Redeemer took to the pitch on Friday (Feb. 4) as the Royals were hosts for the 1st Annual Royal Cup soccer tournament.
The tournament attracted some of the top Ontario Colleges Athletic Association indoor teams from across the province. Games were played at Stoney Creek’s Players Paradise Facility but next season the Royal Cup will have a new home – on campus at Redeemer University College as the anticipated soccer complex will be up and running.
The Humber Hawks women’s team and the Sheridan Bruins men’s team walked away with Royal Cup championships after a day of dominating play. Both teams advanced to the final after dominating round robin play. Both teams had little trouble beating their opponents in the final. Georgian College took second place on the men’s side while Sheridan College lost to the Hawks in the women’s final.
It was an up and down day for the host Royals. The women went through the round robin portion with a 1-1-1 record, placing them in the fifth place game against the Centennial Colts. In pool play, the Royals tied Sheridan 1-1, beat St. Lawrence 3-1, and lost to Conestoga 1-0. In the 5th place game, the Royals took the match in exciting fashion as a shootout was needed after the teams were tied at the end of regulation.
The men’s team finished round robin with a 1-2 record and were also placed in the fifth place game. In pool play, the men lost to Georgian 2-1, lost to George Brown 2-1, and beat Centennial 5-1. Unfortunately for the men they were up against a tough Conestoga team in the fifth place match and fell to the Condors 3-1 giving them sixth place overall.
The complete results of the Royal Cup were:
Sheridan 5 Georgian 1
4th: George Brown
7th: St. Lawrence
