The McMaster women’s volleyball team lost only their second game of the season to division rivals Saturday (Feb.5) on the road against the Guelph Gryphons (25-14, 25-18, 25-19). The Gryphons are now just two points shy of tying McMaster for first place in the Ontario University Athletics West division.
The Marauders had a slow start to the first set of the day. After a win at home Friday night over the Toronto Blues, the women were unable to take the win to Guelph with them.
In the second, despite some hard fought battles, the Marauders fell again. Eleven different players tested their skills on the court Saturday but no one was able to overcome the strong Guelph defence. Guelph’s outside hitter Brooke Lloyd (Whitby) would have a total of 12 kills for the Gryphons. She recorded 14 points on the night. The third set was much like the second as the Marauders lost for the first time this season in straight sets.
Sarah Kiernan (Hamilton) earned 10 kills in the loss. Captain Larissa Puhach (Burlington) was stopped at the net and recorded seven kills on the night.
The Marauders last games of the regular season will be played in Kingston as they take a road trip to face the Queen’s Gaels and the RMC Paladins next weekend.
