The McMaster men’s volleyball team lost out to hosts Guelph Gryphons Saturday night in Ontario University Athletics league play. The Marauders were defeated in four sets, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21.
The Gryphons now sit in fourth place with a 13-4 record and the Marauders drop down to third, suffering their fourth loss of the season.
The first set proved to be a close one as the Gryphons narrowly inched by the Marauders with a score of 25-23. In the second, McMaster would fall to the Gryphons 25-19 before rallying back to take down Guelph in the third. The Marauders, in a must win situation in the fourth, couldn’t translate the need to win on the court and would lose to the Gryphons, 25-21.
McMaster’s Jori Mantha (Vanier) had a solid night, recording 17 kills and three blocks. Outside hitter Kevin Stevens (Winnipeg) had 13 kills on the night. McMaster’s fifth-year vet Tyler Santoni (Kingston) was held to just three kills.
The Gryphons had five different players score double digits in their defeat of the Marauders. Winston Rosser (Whitby) swung for 12 kills and James Stamler (North Bay) added 10 more for Guelph.
The Marauders will go on the road for their last matches of the regular season against No. 8 Queen’s in what is sure to be a match to watch in Kingston.
