Mac cagers pick up third straight win

The McMaster men’s basketball team took down the Gryphons in Guelph on Saturday (Feb. 12), 96-92, to earn their third straight Ontario University Athletics win.

In the first quarter, the Gryphons got off to a quick start going up 12-4. Plagued with early fouls, McMaster was forced to sit out two big scorers, Cam Michaud (Grimsby) and Scott Laws (Gormley).

The bench stepped it up for McMaster in the second as numerous Marauders hit shots from beyond the three point arc. With four minutes to go in the quarter, McMaster gained its first lead of the game with a three by Matt Wilusz (Hamilton). Kenan Etale (Dundas) had 16 points going into halftime powering the Marauders to a three-point lead.

In the third, McMaster kept its lead as the teams traded baskets. With three minutes left in the third, the Gryphons tied the score and it would be a see-saw battle for the lead the rest of the game.

Victor Raso (Hamilton) and Etale continued to produce in the fourth to solidify the win. Jon Moscatelli (Toronto) had a game high 28 points for the Gryphons.

Etale had 26 points and nine rebounds, and Raso had 22 points. Other contributors to the big win for the Marauders were Wilusz with 12 points and six rebounds, Jordan Tew (Greensville) with 12 points and Nathan Pelech (Mississauga) with another 10.

The Marauders are back in action Wednesday night (Feb.16) when they travel to Windsor to take on the second place Lancers. Tip off is at 8 p.m.
