Mac holds on to first in women’s volleyball

The McMaster women’s volleyball team capped off its Kingston road trip on the weekend with a five set win, 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 21-25, 15-9, over the RMC Paladins on Sunday (Feb. 13).

The Marauders finish with a 16-3 regular season record and will play an Ontario University Athletics quarterfinal game at home on Feb. 19.

McMaster took charge the first two sets of Sunday’s match, taking down the Paladins 25-22 and 25-20, respectively. In the match, Meghan Jamieson (Chatham) had a game-high 25 digs, playing libero for the Marauders.

In the third and fourth sets, RMC came back to settle the sets, 2-2. Despite every set being within five points or less, McMaster would be forced to go to a fifth set to decide the match.

In the fifth, the Marauders would get it done to stay atop of the OUA West with a score of 15-9.

Larissa Puhach (Burlington) had 14 kills and one block, as well as 24 digs for the Marauders. Also scoring in double digits was veteran middle Sarah Kiernan (Hamilton) with 11 points (five kills, four aces, 2 blocks) and Kailee Stock (Newmarket) with nine kills and a block.

Paladin rookie Danielle Vortisch (Whitby) recorded a game-high 20 points in RMC’s loss including 17 kills and seven Paladins recorded double digits in digs.
