Mountaineers drop two cage games to Hawks

The Mohawk Mountaineers lost a narrow 82-79 decision to Humber in their Ontario Colleges Athletic men’s basketball game in Etobicoke on Tuesday (Feb. 15).

After trailing 40-21 at the half, the Mountaineers rallied big time. They cut the deficit to one point with just 12 seconds remaining. The Hawks quickly scored to go up by three. Mohawk called a time out in order to inbound the ball from half court, but they missed a three-point attempt that would have tied the score with one second left.

Five Mountaineers scored in double digits during the game. Aminu Bello had 20 points, Jermaine DeCosta scored 15, Tanner Lane notched 12, Taylor Dowhaniuk had 11 and Alex Reis added 10.

“We played very poorly in the first half but were able to hang around,” said Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker. “It was another tough loss but another game that will prepare us for the playoffs.”

The Hawks upped their impressive record to 16-1, while the Mountaineers dropped to 11-6. Still trying to sew up home court for a playoff game, Mohawk completes the regular season Friday night at 8 p.m., when the St. Clair Saints visit the Fennell Gymnasium.

In the women’s game, Mohawk bowed 66-54 to Humber. The Hawks improved to 10-3 and the Mountaineers are now 2-11.

Casey Boggs scored 14 points for the Mountaineers, while Rachelle Abella had 10 and Shannon Laird chipped in with eight.

“Again our girls competed hard, but just cant get over that hump on the offensive end,” said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy.

“We have trouble finishing off some of our sets. We were really proud of their effort and we hope we maintain it for our final game of the season versus. St. Clair on Friday.” That gets under way at 6 p.m. at Mohawk.
