The Mohawk men’s volleyball team marched into Fanshawe College in London on Wednesday (Feb. 16) and swept the Falcons 25-21, 27-25, 25-19. And with that victory the Mountaineers earned home court advantage for a crossover playoff match against Boreal from the East Region Saturday.
Mohawk finished tied with Nipissing in fourth place in the West Region, each with 12-6 records but based on their play head-to-head with the Lakers, hold the tie-breaker over the North Bay team. Fanshawe wound up third with a 13-5 record.
Mo Sulaiman led Mohawk with 13 offensive points. Allan McGrath and Andrew Ross each had 11 and Cam Henschel 10.
Meanwhile, the Mohawk women, who had already sewn up a home playoff match Saturday, beat Fanshawe in a real five set battle, 15-25,25-20,23-25, 25-21, 15-12.
Jennifer Knowles paced the Mountaineers with 17 points and 16 digs. Jenna Gignac had 15 points and 19 digs, Andrea Garbaty collected 12 points and Jessica Knowles scored 10 points and added 13 digs. Mohawk finished the regular season at 18-4 and Fanshawe was 16-6.
The Mountaineers will host La Cite in their playoff.
