Fortuna trades glove for lineup card

Matt Fortuna is leaving the field to become the field manager.

The 14-season veteran of the senior Intercounty Baseball League is retiring from playing to become the Hamilton Thunderbirds field manager.

“I appreciate that both Drew (Brady) and Larry (Wood) believe that I can guide this team in both the short and long term, as our ultimate goal is to turn this team into a perennial contender and a destination for talented players,” said the 32-year-old.

Fortuna played with the Hamilton Cardinals, Brantford Red Sox, Guelph Royals and Thunderbirds. His IBL career counted 283 games with a 0.255 batting percentage from 226 hits, including 46 doubles, seven homeruns and 113 runs batted in.

Fortuna does not know what his roster will look like for the new season but did say the 2011 edition of the Thunderbirds “will carry itself as professionals, be well-disciplined on the field and be prepared to compete against the top teams in the league.”
