Mountaineers will start playoffs on winning note

The Mohawk men and women will both be off to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association volleyball championships this coming week.

The men fashioned a brilliant comeback to take a five setter from Boreal of Sudbury at the Fennell Gymnasium Saturday (Feb. 19). The scores were 23-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-14, 15-9.

Justin Scapinello led Mohawk with 17 kills, two service aces and three stuff blocks. Allan McGrath had nine kills, two aces and two blocks. Kevin Teskey collected five kills, one ace and four blocks and Zac Schulz added four kills, one ace and four blocks. Ryan dela Rosa had his usual strong game defensively with 14 digs.

The Mountaineers will be in their OCAA championship at Seneca College in North York, Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 24-26).

The Mohawk women swept La Cite of Ottawa 25-16, 25-17, 25-16 and will take part in their championship tournament at Loyalist College in Belleville Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 24-26).

Jennifer Knowles was the top offensive gun for the Mountaineers with six kills, five aces and one block. Andrea Garbaty had six kills and two blocks, Lauren Aquilina chipped in with six kills and one ace.
