Double setbacks for Mohawk volleyball

Mohawk’s volleyball teams have to shoot for bronze medals now, after losing their semi final matches in OCAA Championship play.

In Belleville, the Mountaineer women dropped a heartbreaker, 25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 14-25, 12-15 to the Nipissing Lakers Friday (Feb.25). Jennifer Knowles led Mohawk with 14 kills, and three service aces, while her sister Jessica had 10 kills and three stuff blocks. Andrea Garbaty collected six kills and five blocks and Amanda DeHaan added seven kills, one ace and two blocks.

Kellie Crnic had an oustanding match and was selected as the top Mountaineer player. Mohawk advances to the bronze medal semi final against the host Loyalist Lancers at 9:00 am Saturday, while Fanshawe meets Sheridan at 11:00 am. The winner of these two matches will play for the bronze meda at 2:00 pm. Nipissing meets Humber for the gold. Humber advanced with a 3-1 win over Fanshawe.

At Seneca, the Mohawk men dropped their semi final, 30-28, 17-25, 17-25, 21-25 to Redeemer. Justin Scapinello led the Mountaineers with 23 kills and one stuff block and was named Mohawk’s player of the match. Mo Sulaiman had 10 kills, one ace and one block. The Mountaineers will play Nipissing at 9am Saturday and Seneca will play Sheridan at 11:00 am. The winners will meet for the bronze medal at 3 pm.

Redeemer goes to the gold medal match against Humber at 5pm, which dispatched Seneca 3-1 in games.
