‘Dogs defeated by Griffins

The Hamilton Bulldogs were defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins 5-2 on Sunday at Copps Coliseum. Logan Pyett recorded a hat-trick for Grand Rapids while Ilari Filppula and Jamie Tardif each had three assists.

The Bulldogs opened the game’s scoring at 8:55 of the first period while on the power play. Kyle Klubertanz blasted a shot on net from the left point. Olivier Fortier grabbed the rebound before sending the puck to Nigel Dawes, who was positioned in front of the net. Dawes backhanded a shot past Grand Rapids starting goaltender Jordan Pearce and into the net.

The Griffins tied the game 1-1 at 5:19 of the second stanza. Doug Janik sent a pass to Logan Pyett, who carried the puck behind the ‘Dogs net. Pyett wrapped around the net before depositing the puck past Hamilton starting goaltender Robert Mayer and across the goal line. Pyett added his second goal of the game at 10:02. Ilari Filppula received the puck from Jamie Tardif before sending a pass to Pyett, who was stationed at the right point. Pyett blasted a shot that sailed through traffic before beating Mayer between the pads. The Griffins made it 3-1 at 15:38 while on the power play. Jamie Tardif took a shot from the top of the left circle which was stopped by Robert Mayer. The rebound came out to the slot, where Chris Minard collected it before snapping a shot over Mayer’s glove. Grand Rapids took a 4-1 lead at 16:25 with Pyett’s hat-trick goal. Mayer was unable to contain a rebound from a Filppula shot. Pyett grabbed the loose puck in the slot before spinning around and backhanding a shot through the five-hole of Mayer.

Hamilton made the game 4-2 at 6:55 of the final frame. Mathieu Carle sent the puck to Aaron Palushaj, who was skated towards the net from the high slot. Palushaj proceeded to snap a shot that beat Pearce over the glove.

Tomas Tatar added an empty net goal for the Griffins at 19:15 to make it 5-2.

The Bulldogs will welcome the Milwaukee Admirals to Copps Coliseum for a 7:00 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 2nd. All regular season Hamilton Bulldogs broadcasts on AM 820 CHAM will begin with a pre-game show 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
