Royals qualify for OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships

It was a very successful day for the Redeemer Royals soccer program as both indoor teams qualified for the OCAA Provincial Indoor Championships.

On the heals of making the cross-over matches in the outdoor soccer seasons in the fall, both men’s and women’s indoor soccer teams kept pace by finishing in the top two in Wednesday’s Regional Championships. A top two finish advanced both teams.

The Men’s Indoor team finished 1st, claiming the Regional Championship in exciting fashion with a 2-1 win in their final game of the day against the Fanshawe Falcons. The men needed a tie or a win in the game to move on to the Provincial Championships. They finished the day with a 3-1 record recording wins against Algoma, Conestoga, and Fanshawe. Their only loss came against the Niagara Knights.

The women’s day was less dramatic as they stormed out of the gate with 3 straight wins and qualified with 1 game remaining. A win or a tie in their final game would have secured the Regional Championship with a loss giving them 2nd place. The women would go on to lose to Fanshawe 1-0 after the Falcons scored with 1:30 left in the game. Like the men, the women finished with a 3-1 record with wins coming against Algoma, Conestoga, and Niagara.

The men’s and women’s Provincial Indoor Championships will take place on March 24-25 at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan.
