St. Mary’s Crusaders’ Melissa Stefureak’s fourth-place finish was tops for Hamilton high school rowers competing at the Ontario Ergometer Championships on Sunday (March 6) at Ridley College in St. Catharines.
Stefureak competed in the junior high school women’s 145-lbs division which featured 31 athletes rowing a 2km distance on indoor rowing machines. Stefureak posted a time of 7:55.7 while her St. Mary’s teammates, Sarah Goulet and Katie McGurk, were fifth and ninth, respectively.
Westdale Warriors and Bishop Tonnos Titans also sent athletes to the competition. Kayla Lucier and Sam Donald were the top Warriors, placing sixth in the senior and junior women’s open divisions, respectively.
Among the boys who competed, Arte Nitski of Westdale was fifth in the jurnior men’s open division, while Dawson Simpson of St. Mary’s was fifth in the junior men’s 165-lbs competition. Crusaders’ Nate Turnbull was sixth in the junior 150-lbs men’s division.
Bishop Tonnos siblings Filomena Salvo (junior open women) and Frank Salvo (senior open men) each placed ninth in their divisions. Maria Brydon was the fastest finisher for Bishop Tonnos with a sixth-place finish among senior 145-lbs women at the championships.
Other Hamilton athletes cracking the top 10 were: Chris Jacques, St. Mary’s, eighth among junior 165-lbs men; Sarah Duncan, Westdale, ninth among senior 145-lbs women; Anise Truman, Westdale, 10th among senior 135-lbs women; Jane North, Westdale, 10th among junior 135-lbs women.
