Stars dimmed by Bulldogs


The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Texas Stars, 3-2, on Saturday (March 12) at Copps Coliseum. Ian Schultz scored his first professional goal while Drew MacIntyre made 36 saves to lead the ‘Dogs to the American Hockey League victory.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring at 13:16 of the first period. Andreas Engqvist carried the puck down the left side on a two-on-one with Schultz. Engqvist backhanded a pass across the ice that went underneath a sprawling Stars’ defenceman. Schultz dove at the pass before tapping the puck past goalie Richard Bachman and into the back of the net for his first professional goal.

The Stars tied the game 98 seconds later. Greg Rallo carried the puck towards the net before backhanding a shot on net. MacIntyre was unable to control the rebound which allowed Travis Morin to jam the puck underneath the goaltender.

After a scoreless middle period, regained the lead at 15:06 of the final frame. Dany Masse fired a backhand shot that was stopped by Bachman. Andrew Conboy grabbed the loose rebound before shovelling the puck past Bachman and into the net. Hunter Bishop made the game 3-1 at 18:17. Aaron Palushaj carried the puck into the Texas zone along the left side before sliding a cross-ice pass to Bishop. Bishop one-timed a slapshot into the net.

The Stars added a goal at 19:55 of the final frame on the power play. Maxime Fortunus fired a shot on net that bounced out into the crease and created a scramble. Morin jammed the loose puck past MacIntyre.

Hamilton had 33 shots on net before 3,056 fans.

The Bulldogs will finish their four-game home-stand when they host the Rochester Americans at 4 p.m. Sunday (March 13). All regular season Hamilton Bulldogs broadcasts on AM 820 CHAM will begin with a pre-game show 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
