There’s a new kid on the block.
Laurier Brantford is joining the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association on May 1 this year but won’t start competing until the 2014-15 season. Men’s and women’s soccer teams will be the first entries followed by men’s and women’s basketball the next season.
“Joining the OCAA provides the opportunity to develop strong varsity athletic programming for Laurier Brantford students,” said Greg Stewart, manager of athletics and recreation in Brantford. “We also look forward to continuing our strong partnerships with local organizations including CYO and Briers Basketball, Brantford Galaxy and Brantford City Soccer, The Tournament Capital of Ontario and Brantford Sports Council.”
Laurier Brantford will join 30 OCAA member institutions, including Mohawk College, Redeemer University College, Algoma University College, Nipissing University and Trent University.
The OCAA oversees 15 varsity sports, nine league sports and six tournament sports. In nine of these sports, the provincial champions advance to national championships. In addition, OCAA member institutions compete in over 30 extramural club sport events and organize over 500 intramural on-campus sport events.
The OCAA governs intercollegiate sport and promotes physical activity in its member institutions through quality athletic and campus recreation programs. The association seeks to create an environment that promotes academic success, provides a forum for personal development, complements the educational experience, and enhances student life.
