Cards lose narrow decision to Cubs


The visiting Hamilton Minor Peewee Cardinals fell to the Cambridge Cubs, 9-8, in a close Inter-County Baseball Association game.

Starting pitcher Kole Bishop went three innings, striking out six, giving up six runs, two of them earned in the May 8 contest at Optimist Park. Shane Samson pitched two innings giving up two unearned runs. David Candy took the loss, with another unearned run scoring.

The Cardinals offence was driven by Justin Jeffrey who was four-for-four with two doubles and a homer accounting for four runs-batted-in. Ty Whalen also hit a double. Bishop reached base four times with three walks and a single.

The Cardinals scored their eight runs on seven hits.

Wheeler pitched 2 1/3 for Cambridge, striking out three and giving up two runs, one of them earned, to record the win. Cambridge scored 9 runs on 4 hits, with Sunderland getting two hits and an RBI.

The loss evened the Cards record at 1-1. They are back in action Monday (May 9) in Waterloo for a 6 p.m. contest. They take to their home Mahoney Park diamond on Thursday (May 12) when Brantford visits for a 6 p.m. first pitch.

The Cards sit in second place in the early season standings.
