Mac volleyballer Santoni makes student Team Canada

In moving on to the next level, McMaster men’s volleyball captain Tyler Santoni is the latest Marauder to represent Canada in international competition.

After four days of tryouts at the Volleyball Canada national training centre in Gatineau, Quebec, Santoni has been selected for Canada’s National B International University Sports Federation (FISU) team, from among a player pool of 43 of the best players in the country.

The team will compete at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China, Aug. 12-23.

Santoni has just completed a remarkable career in Maroon, capped off by leading the Marauders to this year’s Ontario University Athletics championship and being named McMaster’s Male Athlete of the Year for the 2010-11 varsity season.

In addition to Santoni competing for Team Canada, McMaster will be well represented at the tryout camp for the Canadian junior national team which will compete at the World Championships, July 31 to Aug. 10 in Brazil. The junior team is for players born in 1991 or later.

The selection camp for the junior national team will be held May 17-21 at the Gatineau training centre. Marauders heading to Quebec to compete for a roster spot include: Tyson Alexander, Ian Cooper, Jori Mantha, and T-J Sanders, who was a member of the national junior team last year.

The McMaster contingent will be part of a player pool comprised of 60 prospective candidates from across Canada.
