Mac pins its wrestling hopes on newest recruits

While searching for the next wave of talent which would form the backbone of the McMaster wrestling team, coach Nick Cipriano didn’t have to look far to boost his roster for the 2011-12 season.

Three outstanding prospects have committed to attend McMaster this fall: Jason Buckle, 57-kg, Hamilton Brebeuf; Chris Garneau, 65-kg, Hamilton Bishop Ryan; and Aaron Misner, 90-kg, Hagersville Secondary School.

“We are thrilled to have these three young men commit to McMaster,” remarks Cipriano. “All three are national age group finalists, and will form the core of our team for the next four or five years.”

Cipriano says all three will fit in very well as McMaster looks to move up from its fifth place finish in Ontario University Athletics team standings for men.

Misner will move into the spot vacated by graduate Sean House, who captured the 2011 OUA silver medal in the 90-kg weight class.

“I chose to attend McMaster because of the comfortable atmosphere I felt from the very first practice I attended, “ says Misner, who coincidentally takes over from a fellow Hagersville talent in House. “I believe I can be competitive in my first year under Nick’s coaching and a part of championship teams in the years to come.”

With a solid returning group and the infusion of new blood, Cipriano is optimistic about the Marauders chance.

“The coaching staff is excited about some exceptional student-athletes coming to McMaster, and eager to see them lead us to a championship.”

McMaster will host the OUA Wrestling Championships this season on Feb. 10-11.
