HWMFA Varsity Panthers and Forrest City Thunderbirds met in the third week of the Ontario Football Conference Varsity Schedule. With the weather hazy, humid and reeling off of a loss to Burlington that showed a flat Panthers, who did not showcase the actual skill they have, it was obvious the Panthers were there to prove something.
Thunderbirds did not seem to have an answer to Chuck Walls air game, and they couldn’t stop the ground game when triggered. The Panthers defense were a force to be reckoned with, making multiple sacks and stopping their ground and air attacks at will.
Thunderbirds showed great intensity and enthusiasm throughout the game, never giving up and scoring a touchdown in the last few minutes of the game. The extra point was blocked. Final score was Panthers 27 and Thunderbirds 6.
In other football, the Panther Bantams had a bye and Junior Panthers lost in a battle that was not indicative of the score, 24-7 for the Sarnia Sturgeons.
Next week, Varsity Panthers play the Cougars at Chatham-Kent Secondary School in the fourth week of the schedule; JV Panthers and Bantams are at the Forrest City Thunderbirds.
