Canada Basketball has announced its staff and invited try-out list for women’s basketball, in preparation for the 2011 World University Games, and McMaster is well represented on the team staff.
Former Marauder star Lisa Thomaidis, who is currently the coach of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, has been named head coach of Canada’s Student Team, while current McMaster assistant coach Anne Marie Thuss has been named team manager.
A native of Dundas, Thomaidis was a star player in Maroon from 1990 to 1995, and was named an Ontario University Athletics All-Star three times. She served as an assistant coach with the Marauders for three seasons, prior to being hired to coach at Saskatchewan. This is the first time Thomaidis has been a head coach of a National Team, although she has been involved with Canada Basketball in various roles since 2001.
A member of the McMaster staff for the last 10 years, Thuss has worked with Canada Basketball since 2000, including serving as team manager for the Senior Women’s National Team. Thuss has been an assistant coach under Theresa Burns for nine years and spent one season as the Marauder interim head coach, when Burns was on a personal leave.
The Summer Universiade will be held in Shenzhen, China from Aug. 12-23. Canada will compete in Pool C of the women’s basketball competition, where they will play Russia, Poland, and South Africa in the preliminary round.
