Redeemer’s Shawna Druif has been named the OCAA overall female player of the week. Druif was also named the top female soccer player for the week ending October 2.
The goalkeeper has not allowed a goal in three matches this season, as Redeemer has jumped out to a 3-0-0 record. Redeemer opened the season with a 3-0 win against Niagara last Tuesday, followed by a 2-0 victory over Lambton on Friday and a 1-0 win over St. Clair on Saturday. All three matches were played at Redeemer.
The Redeeemer women’s soccer team as a whole was also named the team of the week. The Royals have outscored the opposition 6-0 in its victories. The Royals are currently ranked No. 5 in the province, trailing first-place Humber by one win in the OCAA West region.
Druif and her team face defending OCAA champion Humber on Wednesday.
Veteran soccer players Ashley Grootenboer and Taylor Prins have also been named the Redeemer Royals Athlete’s of the Month for September. Grootenboer, who plays centre back, has been instrumental in the Lady Royals early success. Controlling the back line, Grootenboer’s ability to lead the Royals defense has put the women’s team in the position of being 1 of only 2 teams in the entire OCAA to yet concede a goal.
Taylor Prins has been an offensive presence for the men’s team scoring in each of the games in September. Prins goal on September 28th against Niagara was the first goal scored at the new soccer complex in a men’s soccer game.
